How to Manifest What You Want: A Practical Guide (Not Just Positive Thinking)

Let me guess: you've heard about manifestation. Maybe you've tried it. You made a vision board, repeated some affirmations in the mirror, tried to "think positive"—and then... nothing happened. Or worse, you felt like you were doing it wrong because everyone else seems to be manifesting their dream lives while you're still stuck in the same patterns.

Here's what I wish someone had told me years ago: Manifestation isn't about tricking the universe with good vibes. It's about self-discovery.

I know that's not as sexy as "manifest your dream life in 30 days!" But it's the truth. And it's actually more powerful.

After years of working with women who feel disconnected from themselves and what they want, I've learned that manifestation isn't a shortcut—it's a practice of reconnecting with who you are, what you actually desire, and then showing up as the version of yourself who already has it.

Let me show you how it actually works.

What Manifestation Actually Is (And Why Most People Get It Wrong)

Most manifestation content tells you to visualize what you want, affirm it, believe it, and wait for it to show up. And then when it doesn't, you're told you "didn't believe hard enough" or you had "limiting beliefs blocking you."

That's not entirely wrong—but it's incomplete.

Here's what's missing: Your subconscious mind is running the show.

You can consciously want something all day long. You can make the vision board, say the affirmations, journal about your dream life. But if your subconscious doesn't believe it's possible—or worse, if it believes you're not worthy of it—you'll unconsciously sabotage yourself every single time.

Your subconscious drives your beliefs. Your beliefs shape your habits. Your habits determine how you show up. And how you show up determines what you create in your life.

So manifestation isn't about convincing the universe to give you things. It's about understanding what's happening in your subconscious, reprogramming the beliefs that are keeping you stuck, and then taking aligned action from that new foundation.

It's self-discovery work dressed up as manifestation. And that's exactly why it's so powerful.

Why You Need to Get in Touch With Your Subconscious First

Your subconscious mind is like the operating system running in the background of your life. It's formed from everything you've experienced—your childhood, your relationships, the messages you absorbed about what's possible for you, what you deserve, who you're allowed to be.

And here's the thing: most of those programs are running without your conscious awareness.

You might consciously want to leave your job and start a business. But if your subconscious believes "money is hard to make" or "I'm not the kind of person who takes risks" or "I always play it safe," guess what's going to happen? You'll stay stuck. You'll procrastinate. You'll find reasons why now isn't the right time.

This is why positive thinking alone doesn't work. You're trying to override decades of subconscious programming with a few affirmations. It's like putting a Band-Aid on a broken bone.

The real work of manifestation is getting in touch with your subconscious—seeing what beliefs are actually running the show—and then consciously choosing to rewrite them.

And one of the most powerful ways to do that? Journaling.

Why Journaling Is the Secret to Effective Manifestation

Journaling gets you out of your head and onto paper. It bypasses the conscious mind (which loves to rationalize, defend, and stay safe) and gives your subconscious a chance to speak.

When you journal, you start to see the patterns. The fears. The beliefs you didn't even know you had. The stories you've been telling yourself about why you can't have what you want.

And once you see them? You can start to change them.

I've watched women journal their way into clarity they'd been chasing for years. I've seen them uncover limiting beliefs they didn't know existed. I've witnessed them shift from "I don't know what I want" to "Oh. THIS is what I want. And I'm going to go get it."

That's the power of getting in touch with your subconscious. That's the foundation of real manifestation.

The Foundation of Manifestation: Get Clear on the WHY

Okay, so you want to manifest something. A new job. A relationship. More money. A different life.

Cool. But here's the question that actually matters: Why do you want it?

Not the surface-level answer. The real answer.

Because here's what I've learned: you don't actually want the thing. You want the feeling you think the thing will give you.

You don't want the new job—you want to feel fulfilled, valued, excited to wake up in the morning.

You don't want the relationship—you want to feel loved, seen, supported.

You don't want more money—you want to feel secure, free, capable of taking care of yourself and the people you love.

The feeling is what you're actually manifesting.

And this is where most people get stuck. They focus on the external thing (the job title, the salary, the relationship) and miss the entire point. They chase the thing, get the thing, and then realize they still don't feel the way they thought they would.

So before you try to manifest anything, get clear on the feeling you're actually after. Journal on it. Sit with it. Name it.

And then—this is the key—start cultivating that feeling NOW.

Don't wait for the new job to feel fulfilled. Find ways to feel fulfilled in your current life. Don't wait for the relationship to feel loved. Find ways to feel loved today. Don't wait for the money to feel secure. Find ways to feel secure right now.

Because when you embody the feeling you're chasing, you start showing up differently. You make different choices. You take aligned action. You become the version of yourself who already has what you want—and that's when things start to shift.

My Manifestation Journaling Method (The One I Use Every Day)

I've tried a lot of manifestation techniques over the years. Vision boards. Affirmations. Meditation. Scripting. And honestly? Most of them felt performative. Like I was checking boxes but not actually changing anything internally.

Then I created a journaling method that actually works—for me, and for the women I coach. It's simple, but it's powerful. Here's how it goes:

Step 1: Release What You Need To

Start by dumping everything that's weighing on you. The doubts. The fears. The frustrations. The "what ifs." All the noise in your head.

This isn't manifestation yet—this is clearing space. You can't connect with your desires when you're drowning in mental clutter.

Write it all out. No filter. No judgment. Just get it out of your body and onto the page.

Step 2: Focus on Gratitude

Once you've released, shift your energy to gratitude. Write down 3-5 things you're genuinely grateful for right now. Not performative gratitude—real gratitude.

This recalibrates your nervous system. It pulls you out of lack and into abundance. It reminds your subconscious that good things already exist in your life.

Gratitude isn't just a fluffy feel-good practice. It's a subconscious reprogramming tool. When you focus on what's already working, you train your brain to look for more of it.

Step 3: Visualize and Connect

Now, connect with your future self or your manifestation coming through. Close your eyes for a moment if it helps.

Visualize yourself already having what you want. Not someday. Not "when it finally happens." Right now. You already have it.

What does it feel like? What do you see? How are you showing up? What's different about you?

Then write from that place. Describe it in present tense, as if it's already real. Let yourself feel it in your body as you write.

This is where the magic happens. You're not just thinking about what you want—you're embodying it. You're showing your subconscious that this version of you already exists. And when your subconscious believes it, your behavior starts to align with it.

Step 4: End With Excitement and Positivity

Finish your journaling session by anchoring into a feeling you want to cultivate—excitement, peace, confidence, joy, whatever feels right.

Write about something you're looking forward to. Something that lights you up. Something that makes you feel alive.

This isn't toxic positivity. This is intentionally ending your practice in an elevated emotional state—because that's the energy you want to carry into your day.

You're teaching your subconscious: this is how I want to feel. This is who I'm becoming.

Manifestation Is About Becoming, Not Getting

Here's what no one tells you about manifestation: it's not about getting what you want. It's about becoming the version of yourself who already has it.

The job. The relationship. The life. Whatever it is—it's not going to fall into your lap just because you visualized it hard enough.

But when you do the inner work? When you reprogram your subconscious beliefs? When you start embodying the feeling you're chasing? When you show up as your future self today?

That's when everything changes.

You start making different choices. You start seeing opportunities you didn't notice before. You start trusting yourself in ways you never have. You start taking aligned action—not from force or desperation, but from clarity and confidence.

And that version of you? She creates what she wants.

That's manifestation.

Start Here

If you're new to this work, start simple. Pick one area of your life where you feel stuck. Journal on these questions:

  • What do I actually want here?
  • Why do I want it? (Keep asking "why" until you get to the feeling.)
  • What beliefs do I have about whether this is possible for me?
  • What would my future self—who already has this—want me to know right now?
  • How can I start feeling that feeling TODAY?

That's it. That's the work.

Not sexy. Not instant. But real.

And if you stick with it? If you commit to understanding your subconscious, reprogramming your beliefs, and showing up as your future self?

You'll manifest more than you ever thought possible—because you'll become the version of yourself who's capable of creating it.
