A Journaling Guide for Moms
Being a mom is one of the most rewarding—and challenging—experiences life can offer. Between the endless to-do lists (mental load), the school runs, and trying to carve out some "me-time," it's easy to lose track of your own well-being. As a mom, you often give so much of yourself to your family, but how often do you give something back to yourself?
One powerful tool that can help restore balance, increase clarity, and support your personal growth is journaling. Yes, a simple pen and paper (and a nice journal doesn't hurt either)! Whether you're a new mom navigating the whirlwind of parenthood or a seasoned pro trying to stay grounded, journaling can provide the space to reflect, process, and dream.
Why Moms Should Journal
-
Clarity and Focus
Journaling helps you declutter your mind. It's like a brain dump, allowing you to unload your thoughts and feelings. As moms, our brains are constantly juggling a million things at once. Writing things down helps you gain clarity on what’s important, what needs attention, and what can wait. -
Emotional Outlet
Motherhood is full of ups and downs, and journaling provides a safe space to express your emotions—whether it's frustration, joy, or even guilt. Writing allows you to process and release emotions in a healthy way. -
Gratitude Practice
It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of the day and overlook the small, beautiful moments that make life special. Journaling is a great tool to practice gratitude, which can boost your mood and overall well-being. It helps you slow down and appreciate the positive aspects of your life, from the way your child’s smile lights up a room to the quiet cup of coffee you get before everyone wakes up. -
Manifestation and Self-Care
When you take time to journal, you're also taking time for yourself. It’s an act of self-care, a way to nurture your mental health. By setting intentions or writing down your dreams, journaling can also be a powerful manifestation tool. You can align with your future self and take small steps toward your goals.
A Little Bit About My Story
My journey with journaling started in 2019, shortly after the birth of my son. Like many new moms, I was juggling everything and feeling overwhelmed. I was also dealing with postpartum depression, and while medication and therapy helped, I found something else that made a huge difference: journaling.
Journaling became my safe space. It helped me work through my emotions, get clarity, and eventually gain the confidence I needed to embrace motherhood fully. What started as a tool to cope with tough times has turned into a daily practice that brings joy, clarity, and alignment to my life.
As a mom and business owner, I understand the struggles of fitting self-care into a busy schedule. But trust me, journaling doesn't need to take hours. Even just five minutes a day can make a huge difference!
Tips for Incorporating Journaling as a Busy Mom
-
Set a Timer for 5-10 Minutes
You don’t need hours to journal. In fact, short, focused sessions are often more effective. Set a timer for 5-10 minutes in the morning or before bed to jot down your thoughts, intentions, or things you're grateful for. That’s all it takes to start reaping the benefits! -
Incorporate It Into Routine Moments
Use the time when you’re waiting—whether it's while your coffee brews, your child’s napping, or during your lunch break. Keep your journal close by, so you can jot down a quick thought or idea. -
Keep It Simple
Journaling doesn’t need to be complicated. You don’t have to write long entries every day. Even bullet points or lists can be a great way to capture your thoughts and release stress. For instance, you could write a quick list of things you’re grateful for or things you’d like to manifest. -
Try Guided Journals
If you’re unsure where to start or feel overwhelmed by a blank page, consider using a guided journal. I created both my journals with moms in mind—they're quick, easy-to-use and effective. We're So Grateful is a family gratitude journal to help families (and moms!) connect with each other and practice gratitude daily while Time to Reflect is a reflective journal focused on reflection, gratitude and manifestation. -
Journal Together
Incorporate journaling into your family’s routine by having a journal time with your kids. This can be a fun way to bond while encouraging mindfulness and gratitude. It’s also a great way to model healthy self-reflection for your children. -
Be Kind to Yourself
Remember, journaling is not a task to check off—it’s a tool for self-care and reflection. Don’t stress if you miss a day. The most important thing is consistency over perfection. Be gentle with yourself and let journaling be a source of joy, not pressure.
Final Thoughts
As moms, we often put ourselves last, but journaling gives you the opportunity to put your thoughts, dreams, and emotions on the page. It’s an incredibly powerful tool for reclaiming your time, boosting your well-being, and tapping into your inner strength.
I truly believe journaling has the power to transform your mindset, and the best part? You don’t need to be perfect at it—just take a few moments each day to reflect, breathe, and express yourself.
