Reflect on Your Year With These Questions
This article was originally published in December 2023 and updated in November 2024.
As the year draws to a close, it’s the perfect moment to hit pause and reflect. Taking the time to answer thoughtful end-of-year reflection questions can help you celebrate your achievements, learn from challenges, and set intentional goals for the year ahead. This simple practice of reflection isn’t just about looking back—it’s a powerful tool for personal growth and alignment.
If you're like me and love a good reflection session (and a chance to dream big for the year ahead), keep reading! I’ll share some of my favorite end-of-year reflection questions to guide your journaling practice.
And, let me tell you: pre-kids, I used to reserve December 31st or January 1st exclusively for this ritual. Now? I’m flexible (and realistic)! It doesn’t matter when you do it—just that you take the time to reflect and align with your intentions.
Why End-of-Year Reflection Matters
This practice can:
- Celebrate accomplishments (because we all need to pat ourselves on the back)
- Learn from setbacks and reframe them as stepping stones
- Gain clarity about what matters most to you
- Set intentional goals that align with your values
Now, grab your journal—or if you’re using my journal Time to Reflect, flip to the blank pages in the back for deeper writing—and dive into these prompts.
End-of-Year Reflection Questions to Journal
1. What goals did you accomplish this year?
Start with a celebration. What goals did you set at the beginning of the year, and how many did you achieve? Whether it was a big milestone or a small win, take a moment to appreciate your progress.
Now, reflect on the goals you didn’t reach. Was it due to factors beyond your control? Or is there something you’d like to approach differently next time? This isn’t about judgment—it’s about learning and adjusting with intention.
For deeper reflection:
- What are you most proud of that wasn’t tied to a specific goal (i.e. integrating a new routine, adopting a new mindset, etc)?
- What small wins might you have overlooked?
- How did your achievements align with your values or long-term vision?
2. What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
Challenges are often our greatest teachers. Reflect on the obstacles you encountered and how you responded. What strategies or inner strengths helped you navigate tough times?
This reflection helps you recognize your resilience and provides insight into how you can approach future challenges with confidence.
For deeper reflection:
- What did these challenges teach you about your boundaries, limits, or priorities?
- Were there any people, habits, or tools that supported you through these tough times?
- How can you use these lessons to approach future challenges differently?
3. In what ways did you step outside your comfort zone?
Growth happens when we stretch ourselves. Think about moments this year when you stepped beyond the familiar—trying a new hobby, speaking up for yourself, or tackling a project that scared you a little.
These moments of courage not only expand your perspective but also build confidence for taking on even bigger challenges in the future.
For deeper reflection:
- What fears or doubts did you overcome in the process?
- How did stepping out of your comfort zone impact other areas of your life?
- How can you continue building on this momentum in the future?
4. What did you learn about yourself?
Self-discovery is a lifelong journey, and every year brings new insights. Reflect on what you’ve learned about your personality, values, or beliefs.
What surprised you about yourself? What strengths did you lean on? Where do you see room for growth? This clarity fosters self-acceptance and helps you make choices that align with your authentic self.
For deeper reflection:
- How have your values or priorities shifted this year?
- What habits or beliefs no longer serve you?
- In what ways did your relationships reflect or influence your self-discovery?
5. What are your intentions and goals for the coming year?
After reflecting on the past, it’s time to look forward. What do you envision for yourself in the upcoming year? Consider the lessons you’ve learned and how they can guide you.
Set a few meaningful intentions or goals—things that truly matter to you. Think beyond just achieving and focus on how you want to feel in the year ahead.
For deeper reflection:
- What kind of person do you want to become in the year ahead?
- How can you align your actions with your values to create meaningful progress?
- What practices will help you stay grounded, motivated, and aligned with your goals?
Making Your Reflection Practice Even More Powerful
End-of-year reflections are incredibly rewarding, but they don’t have to stop there. Here are a few tips to deepen your practice:
- Take your time. Don’t rush through these prompts—spread them out over a few days if needed.
- Set the mood. Light a candle, play soft music, or sip your favorite tea to make your journaling feel like a sacred ritual.
- Be honest with yourself. There’s no right or wrong way to answer these questions. The more authentic you are, the more impactful your insights will be.
