What to Write About in Your Journal: Seven Ideas

Allison Kleinman

We know that journaling is a powerful tool for self-reflection, personal growth, and creative expression. However, there are times when you might find yourself staring at a blank page, unsure of what to write about in your journal (I'm the founder of a journaling company and this still happens to me!). This is where having a set of prompts can be incredibly helpful. In this post, we'll explore seven journal prompts that can kickstart your writing when you are at a loss on what to write about in your journal!

Prompt 1: I Release... (a feeling, thought, or belief)

Begin your journaling session by identifying and releasing any pent-up emotions, thoughts, or limiting beliefs. Writing these down on paper can be cathartic and provide you with a clearer perspective on your inner world. Whether it's frustration, fear, or self-doubt, acknowledging and releasing these emotions is a crucial step towards emotional well-being.

Prompt 2: Something Good That Recently Happened/It Made Me Feel

Shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life. Reflect on a recent event or experience that brought joy or satisfaction. Describe the details of the situation and delve into the emotions it evoked. This prompt encourages gratitude and helps you cultivate a positive mindset by acknowledging the good things that often go unnoticed.

Prompt 3: I Don't Know What to Write (See What Stems)

Embrace the uncertainty and use it as a starting point for your journaling journey. Write about the feeling of not knowing what to write, and let your thoughts flow organically. You might be surprised at what emerges when you give yourself the freedom to explore the unknown. This prompt is about trusting the process and allowing your mind to wander.

Prompt 4: Answer a More Specific Prompt

If a general prompt feels overwhelming, narrow it down by choosing a more specific question or topic (our daily journal has a range of prompts you can choose from!). Specific prompts provide direction and make it easier to channel your thoughts onto paper.

Prompt 5: Write About What You Like About Your Current Surroundings

Shift your focus to the present moment and your immediate environment. Describe the sights, sounds, and feelings associated with your surroundings. It could be the warmth of sunlight streaming through your window, the gentle hum of nature, or the coziness of your favorite reading nook. Grounding yourself in the present can bring a sense of mindfulness to your writing.

Prompt 6: A Challenge You Overcame/How You Overcame It

Reflect on a past challenge or obstacle that you successfully navigated. Describe the difficulties you faced, the emotions you experienced, and the strategies you employed to overcome the challenge. This prompt not only allows you to celebrate your resilience but also provides insights into your problem-solving skills.

Prompt 7: An Action You Can Take Towards One of Your Goals

Focus on your aspirations and set the stage for future success. Write about a specific action you can take to move closer to one of your goals. Whether it's a small step or a bold initiative, outlining actionable plans in your journal can inspire motivation and keep you accountable.

The beauty of journaling lies in its flexibility and adaptability to your unique needs. These seven prompts are starting points and ways to get the mind going when you don't know what to write about in your journal; feel free to customize them or let them inspire your own creative prompts. Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy the process of self-discovery and growth that journaling can offer. Happy journaling!
